Nikon D90 Compared to the Nikon D80 digital SLR: Main Feature Differences


  • The Nikon D90 features an effective pixel count of 12.3-million pixels (D80: 10.2-million pixels)


  • D90 utilizes a CMOS image sensor (23.6 x 15.8 mm) compared to the Nikon D80 using a CCD sensor


  • ISO sensitivity settings: Lo 0.3, Lo 0.7, Lo 1, ISO 200 - 3200, Hi 0.3, Hi 0.7, Hi 1.0 (6400 ISO) compared to the D80 with ISO 100 - 1600, H 0.3, H 0.7, H 1.0 (3200 ISO)


  • The image processing in the Nikon D90 is based on the EXPEED image processing concept


  • Adoption of the Scene Recognition System in the D90, improves auto exposure, autofocus, and auto white balance performance.


  • The D90's focus system has been improved compared to the Nikon D80. The D90 now offers: 3D-tracking (11 points), Superior Auto-area AF, linked to the scene recognition system (separate from subject identification), contrast-detect AF in Live View, and Face priority autofocus with the Face Detection System. The autofocus mode can be selected from "Face priority", "Wide area", and "Normal area".

    Nikon D90 Digital SLR Compared to the Nikon D300 SLR: Main Feature Differences



  • Nikon D90 Body is made of polycarbonate versus the Nikon D300 which is made of rugged magnesium alloy and features enhanced weather seal protection


  • The Nikon D90 offers 12-bit image processing compared to the Nikon D300 which allows 12-bit or 14-bit to be selected.


  • The D300 provides faster start up (0.13 sec) and minimal shutter lag (45ms) compared to the D90 (0.15 sec start up and 65ms shutter lag)


  • D-Movie 720p HD video clip recording function is available on the D90 in Live View mode.


  • The D300 offers phase-difference detection Auto Focus in "Tripod shooting mode" (not available on D90)


  • Support for SD memory cards versus the D300 which supports CompactFlash memory cards


  • The D90 incorporates a 420-pixel RGB sensor for metering compared to the Nikon D300 with a higher end 1,005-pixel RGB sensor.     Nikon D90 Compared to the Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR: Main Feature Differences



  • The Canon EOS 50D features a higher 15.1MP resolution sensor compared to the 12.3 MP Nikon D90

  • The EOS 50D offers faster start up and continuos shooting capability up to 6.3 frames per second (fps) compared to the Nikon D90 at 4.5 fps


  • D-movie feature on the D90 allows for HD video clip recording up to 720p at 24fps (no AF)

  • Nikon D90 incorporates a 420-segment RGB metering system compared to the 35 segment metering system on the EOS 50D.


  • D90 incorporates Nikon's Scene Recognition System. Information from the 420-pixel RGB sensor is used to recognize the subject or scene conditions prior to capture. The results are then reflected in auto exposure, autofocus, and auto white balance for highly accurate control. Face Detection System information from the sensor is applied to AE, AWB, face priority AF (Live View), and zoom playback


  • The Canon EOS 50D offers a more rugged body construction (Mg alloy body covers) compared to the Nikon D90. The EOS 50D also incorporates weather seals for added protection (around the memory card door and battery cover)

  • Both the D90 and the Canon EOS 50D offer up to 3200 native ISO. The Canon EOS 50D offers a 2 stop EV over 3200 ISO sensitivity setting equal to 12800 ISO. The Nikon D90 offers extended sensitivity settings up to 1EV over 3200 ISO equal to 6400 ISO.
